Our own Anne Brown recently won the Top of Texas International Speech contest and advanced by winning 1st place for Area 56, representing at the Toastmasters District 25 Division Contest held Saturday, April 30th.

Anne's speech entitled, "Breathe, Believe, Battle" was an inspirational and touching expression she shared about a member of her family and the will to overcome enormous hardships.

Great job Anne!

And thanks also to Lina who helped out as time keeper for the district competition!

What Makes A Good Mentor

A Good Mentor Always Learns

The Toastmasters International Website is loaded with Easter eggs of information!  Here you can find educational materials free for download, recorded tips and speeches, information to help improve your speaking and leadership skills, and kits to improve your club.  One such free download from Toastmasters International I recently read came from the Successful
Club Series entitled; "Mentoring" (Click here).

A section worthwhile is a review of the essential qualities a mentor possesses.  Recognizing their importance and why they are considered essential not only helps one mentor more effectively, but it also boosts the club and provides benefit to the mentor as well.

Toastmasters International recognizes the 10 essential characteristics of a mentor to be:

Available
Knowledgeable
Respectful
Flexible
Sensitive
A Good Listener
Confident
Considerate
Patient

Supportive

When a new member joins Top of Texas Toastmasters, they are paired with a mentor.  But one of the things that drew me to Top of Texas was the genuine willingness demonstrated by all to help each other succeed, and in turn all of us succeed.  It’s no wonder Top of Texas has been recognized as a Distinguished Club for four years running.  They have the essential characteristics and I’ve found are always available.

Being a good mentor starts with being available.  Nothing else really happens unless there is a dialog and interaction between the mentor and the mentee.  Watching each other grow becomes part of the reward; another hidden Easter egg waiting to be discovered within the Toastmasters organization.

Aparna's Youth Leadership Experience

A couple of months ago, I got an opportunity to be the Youth Leadership Coordinator for Extraordinary Toastmasters At East Fort Worth Montessori Academy. I took the opportunity because this is one of the goals I needed towards my DTM. I was apprehensive and excited at the same time. After carefully planning out the schedule with the President of Extraordinary Toastmasters, the leadership club commenced on September 15th.

There were 5 students in total, ranging from grade 3 through grade 5. They were pretty enthusiastic from the start, and we worked as a team. The best part of Toastmasters Youth Leadership program is the wonderful manuals they provide to the coordinator and the students. They are very similar to our speech manuals with an objective to keep in mind. There were two officer elections and the students carried out the roles of President, Vice President, Secretary, SAA and Historian.

I saw a gradual improvement in their confidence and readiness to give speeches. They had a blast during Table Topics. Somehow, Table Topics was never intimidating to them, and they became experts at it. The finale was the speech contest at the end of 10 weeks. The students prepared hard, and in the presence of their family and friends, 4 students competed at the contest and did a fabulous job.

It was a very rewarding experience for me, especially when some of them mentioned that it made a difference in their life and that they are more confident in giving presentations. A fulfilling and exciting journey, I would never hesitate to do it again. Seeing a child beaming with confidence at the end of the training is definitely worth it.

I would like to thank Sandra Price for guiding me in this endeavor, and encouraging me throughout these 10 weeks.

An Achievement That Was Earned

This past weekend has been a weekend for me to remember. As all of Top of Texas knows, I made it to District to compete in the Tall Tales contest. It's an interesting feeling, the first few moments of a contest, when the contest Toastmaster asks all the contestants to stand in a packed room of around 200 people. To be one of the few who made it that far, to be looked at in admiration by the entire audience, one either feels incredibly proud or incredibly nervous. I felt proud. Before each of the other contests I was shaking in uncontrollable fear, fear of letting myself down. I felt fear that I would slip up, fear that everyone would find ten, twenty, one hundred things wrong with my speech, and that people would look at me in pity after two years of trying my hardest to be a better speaker. This time around though, I knew I was better speaker. I made it this far! I achieved something I never thought I would.

That's how I see it. I see it as an achievement. Not as a failure that I didn't make it in the top three, no. Standing on the District stage brings a feeling no one will ever know until they are up there. When a room full of people have their eyes on you, when those in the back voluntarily paid ten dollars apiece to hear you speak, and you know you earned your way to that masking tape "x" marked on the stage, placing or not placing is merely secondary. Now, don't get me wrong, I would have loved to earn a trophy, but I achieved a victory of my own that night, and that was to have the attention of an audience, to captivate them, to make them laugh, and to hear their applause. Two years ago, if anyone told me that was in my future, I probably would have shrugged it off.

It is also interesting to note that entering the Tall Tales contest at the club level was something I was very unsure about probably until a week before the contest. I thought, I am not a competitor, I am not good enough to compete against all those out there who have been in Toastmasters much longer than I have. I am not a natural. I am not even a Competent Communicator! I'm not Competent! All of the self-doubt bogged me down. Toastmasters though, is so encouraging, everyone in my club dragged me out of that muck and told me to get out of my comfort zone and try the Tall Tales, just try it. I did and found myself on the District stage.

Toastmasters helped me realize that I am greater than I give myself credit, and you all who are reading this, you too, are greater than you give yourself credit. You'll never understand the capabilities you have if you only stick to what you know. Push your envelope, peek through your own barriers, dip your toes, any other cliche about trying something new that will make you reach further, I'm throwing it at you. I want to see you all shine, and if I could give you the feeling I felt Friday night, I would, but I think you would probably want to earn it for yourself.

Surely a Special Moment

Contest season began in February of this year when our club had the club contest. I can’t believe it’s already close to 3 months. What I like about these contests is the enthusiasm in the atmosphere, weeks/months of preparation by the contestants, and finally getting to listen to some of the best speeches. I am just amazed at the amount of preparation so many members put into getting these contests organized. The contest chair has a lot on his/her plate in coordinating these contests, like getting a contest toastmaster, judges, refreshments chair, planning the location, brochures, contestants briefing, etc. I am positive I have might have missed many more details. Hats off to all the staff members who pulled off a massive event of enormous size, the District Conference, including over 150 clubs.

Friday night's Tall Tales contest was phenomenal. I couldn’t help but appreciate the creativity and originality of each contestant as they progressively built their speeches loaded with humor and dynamism. Six great speeches that definitely fit into the category of Tall Tales. Some of them had stories of Armadillos in backyards to contestants shaking hands with President Obama at some point in their life. DeAnna represented our club and did a fabulous job. We are very proud of her.

Saturday afternoon was the International speech contest. I was pleasantly surprised to see our very own Susanne Nickerson come all the way from Seattle to cheer for me. I cannot thank her enough for her support.

Also in the audience were my close friends, members from Top of Texas and my family from India. It surely was a special moment in my life to deliver a speech in front of my parents at the District conference.  The competition was stiff, with contestants presenting wonderful, motivational speeches. I felt great when people walked up to me and said that my speech hit home and touched their heart.

Top of Texas Sweeps Division!

In a Top of Texas Toastmasters first, Aparna Valluri and I, DeAnna Wolf, both won first place in the Division A contest for International Speech and Tall Tales!

With incredibly talented competitors in both competitions, Aparna inspired the audience with "Strange Gifts," while I, her ToTT mentee, had the audience in stitches during "Attack! Attack!"

With a mentor/partner like Aparna and a club like Top of Texas, the journey is far more rewarding than the destination.

It was also a big day for Jeff Wright, who earned the Division award for Outstanding VP Public Relations.  With his tremendous work on bringing the Top of Texas website and blog to having an even larger presence, let's all wish him luck for the District award as well.

Come support us at District, May 2-3, at the DFW Sheraton!

What a Day for Top of Texas!

March 29th was quite eventful for Top of Texas!  Our weekly meeting was low in attendance, but still fun and interesting as always.  A few of us even doubled our duties!  Sandra gave a speech on the changes she has made through her journey with Toastmasters and how she motivates herself to make changes in her life.  I spoke about my trip to Europe and gave some tips on how to make the best of your visit.

The Area 14 Tall Tales and International Speech Contests were held in the afternoon.  Many of us were there to support our club's contestants, Aparna Valluri and DeAnna Wolf.  Both ladies took first place!  Aparna won the International Speech contest and DeAnna won the Tall Tales contest.  Both will go on to compete this Saturday in the Division A contest at the Fort Worth Arts Center!  For more information on the Division A contest, please click here.

On top of to our first place contest winners, our club also won three Outstanding Officers Awards: DeAnna Wolf for Outstanding President, Jeff Wright for Outstanding VP Public Relations, and Aparna Valluri for Outstanding VP Education.

Area 14 Speakin' Safari! - March 29th

Drop in March 29th on our Area 14 Speakin' Safari for some Totally Trippin' Tall Tales and Intense International Speeches!

Top of Texas always has a strong showing in the Area Contest and has done very well in the last several. However competition will be stiff with great speakers from each of the area clubs making this a tough competition.

Why Should You Attend?

Besides the entrainment factor, which is reason enough by itself, there are three reasons you should attend the Area 14 Speakin' Safari.

Opportunity To Support

Our competing Toastmasters are encouraged by having strong support from their fellow club members. Come out and cheer on your favorite speaker and support them with positive feedback.

Opportunity to Learn

Often we get used to the speaking styles of the members of our club. Listening to other Toastmasters provides a opportunity to learn different styles and perspectives.

Opportunity to Serve

Area and Division contests also provide an opportunity to serve. These events could not be held without individuals from each club pitching in to help as judges, timers, ballot counters, and timers. (Hint, Hint...This means you!)

Speakin' Safari Location

This years Speakin' Safari will be in the wilderness area commonly known a Benbrook, Texas. The fun starts at high noon in the Benbrook Public Library.  Click on this link for more details about time and contest location.

Spring Fever has hit Top of Texas Toastmasters!

"Spring Fever" has hit Top of Texas Toastmasters! This past Saturday we held our spring club contest with five competitors, numerous members acting as timers, judges, and ballot counters, and a guest!

We heard three inspirational International Speeches from Marshall Lehr, Aparna Valluri, and Regina Clay. Marshall told us how his mom used a yellow backpack he got as a child to teach him that he can do anything he wants to do and be anything he wants to be! Aparna spoke about the strange gifts she received from her grandmother, a remote control and a set of keys, and how these gifts have guided her through her life. Regina inspired us to take control of our emotional vikings.

Our two Tall Tales speeches were given by DeAnna Wolf and Larry Nickerson. DeAnna was a secret operative saving the world from invading aliens with her rocket launcher and laser gun. Larry, or Sir Henry, was an ex CIA agent saving the world with his black and green sparkly scarf and yellow hard hat! Both speeches were quite entertaining and had the audience laughing!

After competitor interviews and light refreshments, the club contest winners were announced. For the International speech contest, Regina Clay was the second place winner and Aparna Valluri was the first place winner! For the Tall Tales contest, Larry Nickerson was the second place winner and DeAnna Wolf was the first place winner. Aparna and Deanna will move on to the Area 14 “Speakin’ Safari” Spring Contest to be held on Saturday, March 29 at the Benbrook Public Library at 12:00 pm.

Spring 2014 Speech Contest - February 22nd

At Toastmasters, contest season comes twice a year: Spring and Fall.  With Spring just around the corner, it is time for our Spring contests: Tall Tales and International speech contests.

You may be wondering what this means, Tall Tales and International speeches.  Simply put, contestants compete for the best Tall Tale speech or compete for the International speech.  While held at the same gathering, there are technically two contests, and two sets of contestants.  Though sometimes, one contestant will participate in both contests by giving two different speeches.

What is a Tall Tale speech? It is a creative, imaginary story told in 3 to 5 minutes.  The contestant must use his or her imagination to develop and present a story that has exaggerations, plot twists and turns, and is generally entertaining.  Many Tall Tale speeches are humorous.

An International speech is typically an inspiring topic and theme.  The best contestant from each club moves up to complete against other contestants in area, division, and then district.  What is special about the International speech is that the best speaker from each District has the opportunity to compete at the International level against contestants from all over the world.  This year the International speech contest will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during the 2014 Annual International Convention!  Now that’s an exciting destination!

When does all this take place?  Top of Texas will be holding its Spring contest this Saturday, February 22, at 9 am, and we have several members prepared to compete, potentially moving up to the District 25 contest and even beyond, to the International level!  Join Top of Texas during this time for levity, networking, and of course (free) refreshments.  It’s a good time!

Happy Birthday Top of Texas Toastmasters!

This year is our 12th Anniversary! Top of Texas Toastmasters chartered on February 4, 2002 as a corporate club at Con-Way Freight in North Richland Hills. Three years later, it became a community club - still meeting in the North Richland Hills area.

The club struggled along for several years with membership hovering between 11 to 13 members. We had several coaches who worked with the club to try to get membership up to 20 people but it just didn’t happen. At some meetings, there would only be 2 or 3 members in attendance. We were a failing club.

And then things began to change. We lost our location in North Richland Hills. Our newest members, Dan and Faith Pinto, offered us a place to meet at the Northwest Bible Church, our current location. Then we voted to change our meeting time from Thursday evenings to Saturday mornings. At the time we were the only club in District 25 meeting on Saturdays. Then we got another coach, Larry Nickerson, and our members got fired up and got active! They were passionate, competitive, and organized. They hung fliers all around the neighborhood. They organized Youth Leaderships and Speech Crafts. They put info in the local newspaper and the Star Telegram. Then we started getting new members.

The 2009-2010 year was the first year we met both membership and distinguished club goals. Because of our comeback from near death we received the Phoenix Award. The Phoenix Award was based on the mythological creature that died by fire, was reborn and rose from its ashes.

We’ve been doing well ever since; achieving our membership and distinguished club goals for the Distinguished Club Program while also reaching personal goals for our members.

2012-2013 President's Distinguished Club: We had 21 members and achieved 9 DCP goals.
2011-2012 President's Distinguished Club: We had 23 members and achieved 9 DCP goals.
2010-2011 Select Distinguished Club: We had 20 members and achieved 8 DCP goals.
2009-2010 President's Distinguished Club: We had 20 members and achieved 9 DCP goals.
2008-2009: We had 11 members and achieved 9 DCP goals.
2007-2008: We had 13 members and achieved 6 DCP goals.
2006-2007: We had 11 members and achieved 4 DCP goals.
2005-2006: We had 13 members and achieved 7 DCP goals.
2004-2005: We had 11 members and achieved 3 DCP goals.
